Gifts for a new driver: ideas for the first weeks on the road

PlateFob, 30 October 2026

The best gifts for a new driver either make the first months on their own easier or mark the moment they got their licence. Useful ones include P plates, a phone mount, a car care or emergency kit, extra lessons and money towards insurance; the ones people keep include a keyring with their first reg, a photo of the first car and a card that says what you saw.

Quick list

Useful from the first drive

P plates

In Great Britain, green P plates are optional. New drivers can put them on to show they have just got their licence, and keep them on for as long as they like (gov.uk). Magnetic ones come off when a parent borrows the car. Northern Ireland is different: new drivers there must show R plates for a year after the test.

A phone mount

It is illegal for any driver to hold a phone while driving, even when stopped in traffic (gov.uk). A mount puts the map at eye level, so they never need to pick it up. It is a small present that gets used on every trip.

Money towards insurance

If you can, this is often the most useful gift in the first year. Insurance in the first year is a large bill for most new drivers, and a contribution towards it does more than any object. Wrap something small with it so there is still a present to open.

Pass Plus or extra lessons

Pass Plus is a course of at least six hours with a Pass Plus registered instructor, and gov.uk says it is most useful in the year after the test. It may also help them get a discount on car insurance (gov.uk). If a full course is more than you want to give, a couple of lessons with their own instructor on roads they found hard are a cheaper option.

Motorways are a good place to start. Learners in England, Scotland and Wales can drive on motorways with an approved instructor in a dual-control car (gov.uk), but plenty finish learning with little time on them.

A car care kit

A sponge, a wash mitt, screen wash and a cloth for the inside of the windscreen. First cars are usually second hand, and a clean one feels newer. It also teaches them to check the screen wash before the first long drive.

An emergency kit

A torch, a warning triangle, a hi-vis vest and a phone charger that runs from the car. Most of it never comes out of the boot.

A card and cash for fuel

A congratulations card with some money for fuel inside is easy to give and never wasted. Write something in the card about the practice drives, if you were the one in the passenger seat.

Something to keep

A keyring with their first reg

Plenty of people can still recite their first car's reg. A number plate keyring is a small metal copy of their first car's reg, made to order with a few words, a map or a voice message on the back. It goes on the keys they use every day.

At PlateFob we make these in cast metal, in chrome, gold or black. The back can carry a note in a font you choose ("Drive safe, love Mum x"), your handwriting, a map of home, or up to 30 seconds of your voice that they play with their phone camera. You build it in 3D on the site. Orders are not open yet: you can build one now and leave your email. See our new driver gift page for more, or how the voice message keyring plays.

You need their reg to make one, so this gift works best once the car is bought.

A framed photo of the first car

Take it on the day the car comes home, before the first scrape. Print it, frame it, and give it a few weeks later when the novelty has worn off and the car has become theirs.

A card that says what you saw

If you sat in the passenger seat through the practice drives, say so: the stalled start on the hill, the first roundabout they took without asking, the day they stopped gripping the wheel.

For the car-mad new driver

A driving experience day

A track day or a session in a car they could never afford is a good later present, once they are settled on normal roads and the first few months are behind them.

A book or a magazine subscription about cars

For the one who already knows every model on the street. Pick something about the kind of car they love, whether that is classics, rally or electric.

Something for their own car

If they have a first car they are proud of, a new car gift such as a keyring with its reg and a map of the drive home works for this group too.

Small ones for a card or stocking

Cheap, and all of them get used:

For a 17th or 18th birthday

In the UK you can start learning to drive at 17. For a 17th birthday, lessons are the useful present, or help with the cost of the provisional licence and the theory test.

By an 18th, some already drive and some are still learning. If they drive, any idea on this page works. If the car is already theirs, a keyring with its reg on the front and their age on the back covers the birthday and the car at once.

Questions

What do you get someone who just got their licence?

Something that makes the first months easier, such as a phone mount, P plates or money towards insurance, or something they keep, such as a keyring with their first reg or a photo of the first car. One of each is a good pair.

Should I give money towards insurance?

Yes, if you can. It is one of the biggest bills in the first year, and help with it goes a long way. Add something small to unwrap.

When is the best time to give it?

On the day of the test, or when they get the keys to their first car. Anything with their reg on it needs the reg, so the day they get the keys works better for that kind of gift.

Are P plates a legal requirement?

Not in Great Britain: new drivers can choose whether to show them. In Northern Ireland, R plates are required for one year after the test (gov.uk).
